The project financed by the Indian Exim Bank’s Line of Credit is an investment of over US $ 136,625,386.44. The new Hanimaadhoo Airport is designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircrafts used in international air transport. This development will bring about the capacity to operate direct flights to and from destinations in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East and East Africa. A new runway of 2.46 kms, a fuel farm, and a passenger terminal with the capacity to handle 1.3 million passengers per year inclusive of all other modern facilities required for an international airport will be developed under this project.

Once the new international airport is opened in Hanimaadhoo, the region will be directly connected to the international air transport network, and will generate significant increase in opportunities and interest by local and foreign investors to invest in guesthouses, resorts and hotels in the northern atolls.
