President Officiates Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport

Groundbreaking ceremony for the development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport was held on 18th January 2023 in Hanimadhoo. His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of the Republic of Maldives and His Excellency Dr. Subramanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India inaugurated the physical commencement of the works.

Development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is the largest infrastructure project undertaken outside of the Greater Male’ Region and is being delivered through JMC Projects India Limited. With a total project value of USD 136 million, the new airport is designed to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircrafts and upon completion, will commence direct flight operations to South Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East and East Africa. With a new 2.4 kilometer runway and a modern terminal to cater 1.3 million passengers, the project stands to transform the economies of the northern atolls of the country.

The ceremony was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior officials of the government, members of island councils from the region as well as a large number of residents from the island of Hanimadhoo.
